THE BREAKDOWN

A 5-Week Beginner Yoga Series

The Breakdown is designed to take yoga back to the foundations—making the practice approachable, understandable and adaptable to the person actually doing it.

Over five weeks, we’ll slow things down enough to learn, ask questions and explore different options, while still spending plenty of time actually practicing.

This isn't about being flexible, wearing the right clothes or achieving the “perfect” pose. It's about understanding the practice and discovering how yoga can work in your body.

WEEK 1 — START HERE

What is yoga, anyway?

We’ll start with the basics: what yoga is, where the physical practice fits into a much larger tradition, the role of breath, and what strength, mobility and flexibility actually have to do with it.

Then we'll start moving—slowly exploring foundational shapes and learning how props, positioning and different options can make the same practice accessible to different bodies.

Practice focus: Breath, body awareness, mobility and foundational shapes.

WEEK 2 — BREAK DOWN THE POSES

What are we actually trying to do here?

This week, we'll unpack some of the poses students see again and again—downward dog, forward folds, lunges, warriors, plank, cobra and more.

Instead of focusing on what a pose is “supposed” to look like, we'll explore what we're trying to experience within the shape and the different ways we can get there.

We'll also bust a few common yoga myths along the way—starting with the big one: you do not need to be flexible to do yoga.

Practice focus: Foundational poses, strength, stability, mobility and using props/options with purpose.

WEEK 3 — PUTTING IT TOGETHER

How does this become a yoga class?

Now that we understand some of the pieces, we'll start connecting them.

We'll explore transitions, how breath and movement can work together, what instructors mean by common cues, and break down familiar sequences like a sun salutation.

This is where individual shapes begin to feel like a practice rather than a collection of poses.

Practice focus: Transitions, simple sequencing, breath + movement and building confidence within a flow.

WEEK 4 — EXPLORE THE PRACTICE

Yoga doesn't have to look—or feel—one particular way.

Flow. Hatha. Yin. Restorative. Maybe even a little Yoga Nidra.

What's the difference? Why might you choose one over another? And what are you actually supposed to be doing when you're there?

This week, we'll experience several styles of yoga rather than just talking about them. Students will get a taste of different approaches—from more active, breath-led movement to longer-held shapes, supported rest and stillness.

We'll also explore an important distinction: different styles doesn't necessarily mean easier or harder.

A slow practice isn't automatically a beginner practice. A sweaty practice isn't automatically advanced. And being able to make a complicated shape doesn't necessarily mean someone is “better” at yoga.

Practice focus: Experiencing different types, noticing how each affects the body and understanding what type of practice might serve you at different times.

WEEK 5 — MAKE IT YOURS

There is no final version of the pose—or the practice.

In our final week, we'll bring everything together into a complete accessible yoga practice while exploring some of the tradition and philosophy that exists beyond the physical poses.

Students will practice making their own choices: when to add a layer of challenge, when to use support, when to rest, which variation works for them and how to recognize what their body is asking for.

The goal isn't for everyone in the room to look the same.

It's to create a room where everyone can practice together.

Practice focus: Choice, autonomy, accessible variations and a complete beginner-friendly practice.

Throughout the five weeks, we'll also gently unpack some of the ideas that have become attached to modern yoga—the belief that yoga requires flexibility, that props are only for beginners, that more advanced means more complicated, or that a pose needs to look a particular way to be “right.”

Less performance. More understanding.
Less perfection. More options.
Yoga that meets people where they are.
